Jennifer Lopez is the subject of this documentary that focuses on the singer’s multi-faceted career while also exploring the adversity she has had to go through to make it. The film eventually crescendos into J-Lo’s 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance and everything she had to do to get to the biggest stage in the world. It also highlights the support she received from her former fiancé Alex Rodriguez and explains how she managed to reconnect with Ben Affleck.

God’s Favorite Idiot
Comedian Melissa McCarthy and her real-life husband Ben Falcone star in this series about a tech support employee who finds love with a co-worker at the same time he becomes the unwilling messenger of God.

This new reality series follows families that have become so busy with their individual lives that they have completely lost touch with one another. Sound relatable? In each episode, the families take a week away from the rigors of their everyday lives to go on a journey trying to rebuild their broken bonds. Leaving technology behind, they live in old-fashioned accommodations where they are greeted by a guide who gives them different tasks for the week. By the end of the experiment, they are a “rebooted family,” who (hopefully) have a deeper appreciation and understanding of each other. Interesting concept. Reminds me of that old ABC “Wife Swap” show from 2004.

THURSDAY JUNE 16
Father of the Bride
These days they will remake just about anything. This reimagining of the 1950 and 1991 films sees Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan pick up where Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, Steve Martin and Diane Keaton left off. This time around the focus is on a Latin family with “Saturday Night Live” star Chloe Fineman filling in as the wedding planner.

The sophomore season of this Emmy-nominated Peacock original series continues the story of a one-hit wonder group from the ’90s trying to reclaim their shot at stardom. The Lake
The top pick of the week is Amazon’s answer to “Schitt’s Creek.” “The Lake” follows Justin (played by Jordan Gavaris), a gay man trying to reconnect with the biological daughter he gave up for adoption when he was a teenager. As he tries to forge a relationship with Billie (played by Madison Shamoun), things go awry when he learns that his family left the family cottage to his stepsister Maisy-May (played by Julia Stiles). The series, shot in North Bay, is fresh, funny and fabulous.

The Summer I Turned Pretty
Based on the book by Jenny Han, this series is the story of 16-year-old Isabel “Belly” Conklin (played by Lola Tung). She’s a teenager who, while spending a summer in Cousins Beach with her family, becomes involved with two brothers at the same time. Teen anxiety and drama can only ensue.

The Martha Mitchell Effect
Once the talk of the town in Washington DC, Martha Mitchell, the wife of US Attorney General John Mitchell eventually drew the ire of the Nixon Administration and faced gaslighting and slander in her attempts to take down the president after the Watergate scandal. Her story is chronicled in this new documentary about the woman who became known as the “Mouth of the South.”

Cha Cha Real Smooth
Andrew (played by Cooper Raiff) is a new grad still trying to find himself after college. While he figures it out, he is forced to move back in with his parents and while things look bleak, it’s only at that moment when he discovers his ability to motivationally dance at bars and bat mitzvahs. Dakota Johnson co-stars in the movie that took home the US drama audience award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

Absolutely love this Emmy-nominated doc series that takes audiences into some of the world’s most extraordinary homes. The second season that premieres this Friday features a theme of “boundary-pushing visionaries” who build their impressive residences in locations that include the Netherlands, South Africa, Indonesia, and Iceland.

DON’T MISS
Dark Winds
Set in 1971, this unique psychological thriller follows two Navajo police officers, Joe Leaphorn (played by the ageless Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (played by Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate a double homicide. It’s based on a book series by Tony Hillerman that Robert Redford (yes, that Robert Redford) acquired the rights to in 1986. George RR Martin (yes, that George RR Martin from “Game of Thrones”) is also involved in the project as to an executive producer. The show is shot by a crew that is 85 per cent Native American and stars Native Americans in all the lead roles. Keep an eye out for Canadian Jessica Matten on the show as well.
